A resume is something which is not more than 1 or 2 pages long. It describes your professional career and the skills you have.

I am attaching an example resume for your reference at the end of this article.

We start by describing the different type of sections we can have in our resume. Also, these are in priority manner in the below list:

  • Description/Summary
  • Contact Information
  • Work Experience
  • Projects
  • Skills
  • Academic Qualification
  • Additional Activities

Description/Summary

One of the biggest mistakes we generally do is that we write one long paragraph in our summary but don’t ever do that.

Keep your summary to be simple and one or two liners. Describing your experience and who you are.

Example: Mobile developer with 4 years of experience

Reason for keeping it short and simple is that nobody wants to read your resume because it feels boring. Every interviewer wants to know a brief about you from it and wants you to describe yourself in a good way.

Contact Information

  • Write your phone number and address. The address must be the one where you are currently working. It reflects that you are in a city where opportunities are there and you are ready to move in for the new opportunities.
  • Don’t ever write the full address. Keep it with city name and country you live. Ex: Gurgaon, India.
  • Provide your email id also but don’t keep your email ids like iamsmart@xyz.com Just keep them as simple as possible. It reflects professionalism inside you.
  • You can provide social links as well but keep them in a separate column. For ex: LinkedIn, Github, Stackoverflow, medium or any other platform in which you are active.
  • Never overflow this information with lots of content.

Okay, So this is always debatable whether I should place my picture over the resume or not. So I have been through many good articles and it’s totally on you if you want to place it or not but there is one thing for that also if you are applying for jobs in a country like India it’s good to place your small professional picture over the resume because it reflects your authenticity and people suddenly starts trusting you more and feels like you are a confident person.

Work Experience

This column is going to be of medium length and you can place your designation first and then company name and a little detail about the company. Also, add the time period you worked in a company. Starting with the current organisation. No need to include project details here. Keep it clean.

Projects

You can keep this column to be the descriptive one because, in the end, your work reflects you.

So, keep the title and the little description of it that is enough. Place the links of your projects it reflects the authenticity of your work.

Skills

Here you can place all your skills at once place in one word only. Do not overload this with lots of skills you have. Keep only those skills which are relevant to your interview or you are really confident about them. If you have lots of skills just make multiple resumes according to the interview you are going to take.

For example, I am a Mobile application developer and I know both Android and React Native development. These are two technologies which are used in the market for mobile development. So, I created 2–3 resumes one for Android, React Native and third one reflects both and Based on this I changed the projects as well.

If you overload your skills with lots of information then it will reflect that you are overconfident about yourself and generally people don’t have that much of knowledge with that experience. So, If you write something, be confident about that.

Academic Qualification

No need to write all the education starting from your 1st class. Just write the higher education you have starting from graduation. There is no rule for writing the marks you got there. It totally depends on you if you are having good marks just add them.

Additional Activities

According to this article, this section is having lowest priority but it is the most important in one way.

If you haven’t done some additional things then no need to give importance to this column and no need to fake it as well. Just leave this part.

If you have done something really good for eg: Started a company, published a research paper or did something really good in sports or music then you can add this one and it will reflect that you are a multi-talented person.

No need to add hobbies in your resume.

At last, After completion of your resume look at it once only and ask yourself if you have to choose this candidate for the interview would you do that? This simple question will resolve all your queries.

Here is the example resume which I created using https://novoresume.com/
I have selected the free version of it and modified the headings according to my use so I used “Company” heading to “Projects” because I wanted them to be that place. So, with a few tricks, you can save your money and create a useful resume. You can apply all the points that I mentioned in this article to this dummy resume and can live a better life and make others lives better as well.
